The Greatest Love of All

I was struck with disbelief and sadness as I learned of Whitney Houston’s tragic death yesterday.   Reading the news, I heard in my mind her voice singing “The Greatest Love of All.”   Whitney Houston sang a lot of songs, but of all of them, this one has impacted me the most.  It was released in 1986, during the time that I was healing from my painful childhood experiences and moral failure in young adulthood that led to a suicide attempt in 1984.  The song  helped me to see my inner beauty,  to love and  forgive myself, and to have the courage to pursue my dreams.  It helped me discover The Greatest Love of All, God’s unconditional love for me, which will not waiver whether I succeed or fail.

When I became a mother, the song inspired me to see things through my children’s eyes, to laugh with them, to help them see the beauty inside them, and to teach them to love themselves as God loves them.    I now have 6 children, with ages ranging from 12 to 25 years, and I’m very grateful to see that my children know “The Greatest Love of All” too.

Rest in peace, Whitney.   Thanks for the gift of your voice, which will continue to inspire many for years to come.

THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL
As performed by Whitney Houston (1986)

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone to fulfill my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me

[Chorus:]
I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone’s shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can’t take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be

[Chorus]

And if by chance, that special place
That you’ve been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love
