A Delightful Chance Meeting

Every now and then, in our travels, we cross path with people purely by chance in following a spontenous whim. My husband and I have been camping for the past few days at Shakamak State Park in Jasonville, Indiana, enjoying some peace and quiet on the weeknights of the Fall season when children are in school. This afternoon, my husband sponteneously took me to Boot City in the nearby city of Tere Haute to get me a pair of boots, because he said I needed a pair to go with my cowgirl hats. And as I often do on such a trip, being in the car and needing snacks to stay awake, I developed a craving for Asian snacks. So, we asked Google for the nearest Asian grocery store from our location, and that’s how we found Asian Market in Tere Haute and met Mrs. Ly (pronounced “Lee”).

Mr. and and Mrs. Ly have opened up this small Asian food market “to have something to keep busy” after raising 4 kids. On one weeknight every 2 weeks, after the store closes, she teaches a cooking class on the 2nd floor above the store. I had so much fun chatting with her, sharing about our families and comparing life as Asians in Los Angeles vs Tere Haute, I could have stayed there for hours. When it was time to leave, I had to get a few pictures with her. And along with the snacks, I also bought her cookbook and had her sign it. I can’t wait to add the dishes in her cookbook to my family meal repertoire, and on my next trip out this way, I think it will be fun to fit her cooking class into the itinerary.

So next time you have a craving on your travels, follow it. You just might meet someone as delightful as my Mrs. Ly.
